FAQs

Who should apply?

Those individuals with a strong interest in basic research and medical sciences should apply to the Virginia Commonwealth University M.D./Ph.D. program.

What is required?

Extensive research experience is not necessary, however some research exposure is highly recommended.
In addition to research exposure, students must meet all standards for admission to medical school including the completion of the appropriate coursework, MCAT and clinical exposure.

Who is not eligible?

International students, students currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program or students who have already obtained a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences.

How do I apply?

Students who are considering applying to VCU’s School of Medicine and also wish to be considered for the M.D.-Ph.D. program must apply to the medical school through the American Medical College Application Service.

On your AMCAS application, you must designate “Combined Graduate/Medical Degree” and complete the additional essay portions including the M.D.-Ph.D. personal statement and significant research experience. You must also obtain a letter from one of your research mentors who can comment about your contributions to the lab and your role in research projects. Although this may be the same person who agreed to write a letter for your medical school application, the M.D.-Ph.D. letter should more specifically address your research. When all essays and letters specific to the M.D.-Ph.D. program are received, your file will be complete and you will be considered for an interview.

Are students admitted from the medical school class?

Students can be admitted to the program after they have matriculated into medical school. However, this can only happen if there are available slots and students are only taken from the MS1 class. All students admitted from the MS1 class receive the same benefits as all other members of the program. If the director finds the student’s academic and research record acceptable, the student will be asked to complete a supplemental application Description: ../images/layout/icon_word.pngand reference forms Description: ../images/layout/icon_word.png. The student will then be interviewed in the same manner as a student who applied directly to the MD-PhD Program.

If I am not admitted to the M.D.-Ph.D. program, will I still be considered for medical school admission?

Yes, but only at your request. If you are not accepted, you may request that your application be sent to the medical school admissions office by contacting Ms. Sandra Sorrell, program administrator, at ssorrell@vcu.edu.
